Selected and Sequenced By George Evans

Coming Soon to Verve: untitled - 2007

A collection of jazz tracks by one of my favourite pop groups. They first hit it big as a foursome in the early 70s, and went on to become one of the top-selling R&B acts of the 80s. Despite their later success, the group's early jazz recordings convey both the great prowess as entertainers, and the considerable musical chops flung around like feather boas by these ladies at the very start of their career. Make no mistake: these are the performances that catapulted them to fame, fortune... and notoriety!
Anita O'Day: The Diva Series - 2003

"The best one-disc collection ever produced from my Verve recordings."

Anita O'Day

Astrud Gilberto: The Diva Series - 2003

"Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian canary with the voice like honey and diction that defied belief, has been compiled many times on Verve, but rarely as well as on her entry in 2003's The Diva Series."

AllMusic Guide
.
Billie Holiday: The Diva Series - 2003

"Billie Holiday played a very important role in the development of jazz singers, and this is a good compilation of her work. George Evans who selected the tracks for this compilation has chosen some of her finest recordings with some of the greatest names in jazz."

.
Carmen McRae: The Diva Series - 2003

"Each of the 16 tracks here is like a primer on how to be a vocalist, jazz or otherwise. McRae's entry in Verve's Diva Series is a fine introduction to her 1950s recordings."

AllMusic Guide
.
Dinah Washington: The Diva Series - 2003

"This CD gives an excellent feel for the outstanding talents of Ms Washington, demonstrating her ability across a wide range of settings from big band to small jazz group, and she excels in all of them. Unless you own most of the original albums these tracks come from, this is a must-buy CD."

Don Mather - Musicweb, UK
.

Ella Fitzgerald: The Diva Series - 2003

"What an album -- a must-have for any Ella Fitzgerald fan."

George O'Leary, Amazon.com

"Ella Fitzgerald's entry in the Verve Diva Series is a 16-track compilation of selections from the first three decades of her recording career. While there is a cornucopia of Ella collections to choose from and this one is not essential, it does serve as a nice introduction to Ella's early years and peak '50s years, too."

Sarah Vaughan: The Diva Series - 2003

"If you are not familiar with the work of Sarah Vaughan this album is a must, I only wish I had all the albums the tracks come from, there is not an inferior track on it. Congratulations to George Evans who made the selection."

Don Mather - Musicweb, UK
.
Buddy Greco: Talkin' Verve - 2001

"These are some of Buddy Greco's recordings for the Kapp and Coral labels circa 1955. Buddy seems to be at his very best in trio settings. Listen to his handling of 'Playing the field,' 'Cuba,' 'Yes sir that's my baby.' I have never heard better interpretations."

Here Come The Boys: A Canadian Crooner Collection - 2004

"This is a distinctive disc because it's a gaggle of all-Canadian men singers, rare in jazz and rarer still today since female warblers seem to dominate the thinking of every label and festival chief in North America. George Evans is the guy who produced it, so it's fitting that his stylish "Lullaby Of The Leaves" is one of the best tracks. (A) smart concept that boasts excellent sound quality."

Rita di Ghent: Standards Sessions Vol.1

"This luscious, sensuous and swinging album was runner-up for Best Album of the Year in the 2002 National Jazz Awards."

Rita di Ghent: Standards Sessions Vol.2

"A torch classic from one our great Canadian vocal adventurers, performed with passion, honesty, and depth."
