So you want to be a jazz singer...

It's become trendy, even chic to say “I'm a jazz singer” but that doesn't mean that just anyone should have license to sing jazz, or sing at all for that matter, let alone in public. As an instructor, I may be unique in that I refuse to waste anyone's time or money. So before you decide to jump on the bandwagon, ask yourself these four basic questions:

  • Have I studied vocal technique - do I understand my voice and how it works?
  • Is my musicianship up to the task of standing out in front of instrumentalists whose experience and “chops” probably far outweigh my own?
  • Do I know who I am and what I am singing about?
  • Am I prepared to sing in public?

Then ask yourself question five:

  • Why do I need to sing?

If you answered “no” to more than two of questions one-four, you are probably not prepared to sing in public. If you had to think more than a moment before answering question five, it's entirely possible that you shouldn't be singing at all.

Now that we have that out of the way…

I am passionate about singers, singing in general, and jazz and cabaret performers in particular. It's a great pleasure for me to listen to, instruct, coach, and guide performers to new levels of achievement, artistry and professionalism in their work.

Promising entry-level students who audition for me will study:
  • Basic vocal technique;
  • Healthy vocal practices;
  • The Great American Songbook;
  • And a rudimentary study of themselves as creative artists.

Working professionals who wish to hone their craft can come to me for:

  • A vocal health assessment;
  • Performance repertoire assessment and critique;
  • Live performance evaluation and coaching;
  • Repertoire research and “act-building.”
